throw distance

Throw distance is the space between a projector’s lens and the screen or projection surface. It helps indicate where the projector can be placed to create an image of a particular size.

What throw distance means

Throw distance is the distance from a projector’s lens to the screen or other projection surface. It is used with the projected image size to describe how far the projector needs to sit from the surface.

A product page may show one throw-distance figure, a range, or a distance tied to a particular screen size. The measurement convention can vary, so check whether the stated distance is measured from the lens, the projector body, or another reference point.

Why it matters on ProjectorFit

Throw distance helps you judge whether a projector’s placement can suit your room. A projector with a suitable throw distance may work on a shelf, ceiling mount, or other planned position without placing the image too far forward or too far back.

It matters most when the projector position is fixed, the room is shallow or unusually deep, or the screen size is already determined. If placement is flexible and the product has a broad usable range, the exact figure may be less restrictive.

What the number does not tell you

Throw distance is a placement measurement, not a quality rating. It does not by itself indicate brightness, contrast, resolution, sharpness, fan noise, or overall picture quality.

A throw-distance label also does not prove that every screen size is available at every listed distance. Zoom range, lens design, image-size limits, and installation adjustments may affect the usable placement range. If a product listing gives only a capability label or an incomplete catalog value, the full range and measurement basis remain unknown.

What to check on a product page

Look for:

  • The stated throw-distance range, if one is provided
  • The screen or image sizes associated with that range
  • Whether the measurement is from the lens or the projector housing
  • Any separate information about zoom, lens shift, or installation position
  • Whether the listing gives a throw ratio rather than a direct distance
  • Any limits or conditions attached to the published figures

Nearby concepts include throw ratio, projection size, lens shift, and keystone correction. These terms describe related aspects of projector placement, but they are not interchangeable with throw distance.
